The Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Sextet

Friday, Jan. 30, 2009
Generating popular responses with a fascinating polyrhythmic formula, Gabriel Alegria’s Afro-Peruvian Sextet continues to excite the music world reminiscent of Cuban and Brazilian jazz musicians. Gabriel Alegria remains one of the most influential figures on the jazz scene in Peru, creating music that combines the African roots found in American jazz with Afro-Peruvian music from his country’s Pacific coast. In all of Alegria’s work, the rich legacy of the Afro-Peruvian music can be heard in a contemporary jazz context. With their 2009 United States tour, the sextet continues to define Afro-Peruvian jazz as the newest voice to come from Latin America.
