Current Concert

Thursday, March 8, 2012 – Four80East

Led by co-founders Rob DeBoer and Tony Grace, Toronto-based Four80East returns to Rochester for what is developing into an annual “Rite of Spring.” With an infectious heavy-groove sound characterized by distinctive melodies, their sound “lies at the forefront of what has been called the nu jazz movement – taking the best of contemporary jazz and pop styles and aligning them to produce an improvisational dance-infused sound.” Although co-leaders/founders Rob DeBoer and Tony Grace never considered their music typical of the smooth jazz genre, the group remains a bright spot on the smooth jazz radar screen.

As a special feature, Paradigm Shift will again open the concert with their signature grove jazz.  Popular among Rochester-area music fans, the band continues to “tear up stages across the globe with boiling-hot grooves and a gritty attack that pleasantly recaptures the music’s rightful street-level ambiance.”

Saturday, April 14, 2012 – The Ulysses Owens Quintet: NEW GROUP!

Exodus To Jazz proudly presents the Ulysses Owens Quintet, Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Hochstein School of Music Performance Hall.  The group will feature tunes from Owens’ new CD project scheduled for release in February 2012.

Group leader and drummer Ulysses Owens returns to the Exodus To Jazz stage leading with a stellar quintet that will feature tunes from his new CD project scheduled for release in February 2012.  In addition to his own groups, Owens performs regularly with the most prominent bandleaders including Wynton Marsalis, Kenny Barron, Regina Carter, Benny Golson, Christian McBride, Mulgrew Miller, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Lee Knoitz, and Eric Reed. As Kurt Ellings’s drummer, he received a 2010 Grammy Award for Elling’s CD “Dedicated to you.”

Bassist Christian McBride, the first choice among today’s acclaimed group leaders including Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, Sting, Pat Metheny, Diana Krall, David Sanborn, Chick Corea, George Benson; McBride was revered by late greats including Joe Henderson, Betty Carter, Milt Jackson, Freddie Hubbard and JJ Johnson.  Acclaimed “Hot Jazz Artist of 1992” by Rolling Stone, McBride “has everything other musicians want a great jazz bass player to have — juicy sound, phenomenal dexterity and all the tonal accuracy that lesser bass players wind up pitching over the side in despair.”

Trumpeter Marcus Printup has been a member of the Jazz @ Lincoln Center Orchestra since 1993.  Acclaimed as a ‘bold, cagey soloist’, Printup is ‘one of New York’s best trumpeters’, a tribute that keeps him in demand as an educator and as sideman to perform/record with for prominent leaders including Betty Carter, Dianne Reeves, Eric Reed, Cyrus Chestnut, Wycliffe Gordon and Marcus Roberts.

Pianist Christian Sands, a rising star on the jazz scene, exhibits a surprising maturity in his approach to interpreting tunes.   With three solo albums already to his credit, he has performed with many jazz luminaries including Christian McBride, Candido, Bobby Sanabria, Lou Donaldson, Kirk Whalum, Avery Sharpe, Rufus Reid, Winard Harper, Phil Woods, James Moody, Frank Wess, and Wycliffe Gordon.

Saxophonist Jaleel Shaw is a regular member of the Roy Haynes Quartet and Charles Mingus Big Bands; as leader of the Jaleel Shaw Quintet and sideman for other groups he is active in clubs in New York City and abroad.  Jaleel contributed to recent CDs from the Roy Haynes and Jeremy Pelt quartets, Mingus and Count Basis Big Bands and the Either Orchestra.

Saturday, May 5, 2012 – Eric Person & Metamorphosis

Saxophonist Eric Person has established a reputation in the jazz community for his stellar sideman work over the past 20 years with the Dave Holland Quartet, Chico Hamilton, McCoy Tyner, World Saxophone Quartet and many others. He’s also performed with rock and funk icons Ben Harper, Vernon Reid and Bootsy Collins. Person returns to the Exodus To Jazz stage with Metamorphosis and their very melodic, rhythmic, and groove jazz sound. Music critic Bill Milkowsky calls Eric Person, “A risk-taking improviser, accomplished composer and inveterate swinger.” While not related to him, Eric Person joins Houston Person in presenting two styles that bracket the range of jazz “saxophony”.
