Gerald Clayton: Nature or Nurture?

The City Newspaper profile of Exodus To Jazz featured artist Gerald Clayton reveals serious doses of both ‘nature’ and ‘nurture’ in the development of his prodigious talent. With acclaimed familial antecedents (parents and uncle) and tutelage from the best jazz piano teachers, the buzz generated by Clayton and his trio is no surprise.

Check out the City Newspaper profile, then check out the Gerald Clayton Trio this Saturday. And if you are so inclined, let the debate continue; the buzz surely will!

Next Up: Gerald Clayton Trio

Based on comments I’ve received from those of you who attended the January 9th Tamir Hendelman Trio concert, the Lutheran Church of the Reformation is a major venue upgrade for the series from both an acoustic and aesthetic standpoint. Add to that the well-paced dynamic performance of Tamir’s trio, I feel safe saying the season’s opening concert was a success. The City Newspaper concert review reinforces my biased assessment.

With Tamir Hendelman delivering the first-punch, Grammy-nominated Gerald Clayton promises a solid second-punch of the series opening “piano capers.” Continue reading

Welcome to the ETJ 2011 season!

Thanks for visiting Exodus To Jazz. After an extended hiatus, I am pleased to announce the upcoming line-up of concerts from January through May 2011. Bracketed by pianist Tamir Hendelman’s concert on January 9th and nineteen-year-old vocalist/bassist Kate Davis’ concert on May 7th the featured artists range from those firmly established at the pentacle of their profession and those rapidly emerging onto the national/international scene.

Groups led by pianist Gerald Clayton, guitarist Marc Antoine, vocalist Somi and Four80East complete the line-up that spans a broad spectrum of styles. Consistent across them all is accessible music that bridges the chasms between “traditional and innovative”, “straight-ahead and contemporary”. The critical acclaim each group receives is in recognition of their impressive talents (i.e. serious chops) and their commitment to create memorable experiences for audiences.

In addition to the groups in the line-up, I am pleased to announce that a key outcome of the hiatus is a new home for the series:

Lutheran Church of the Reformation
111 Chestnut Street
Rochester, New York 14604

With the excellent acoustics of its main sanctuary, ample parking facilities and wheelchair accessibility the Lutheran Church has become a venue of choice for numerous musical events; I am delighted to add the Exodus To Jazz series to the list. See the “Venue & Seating” section for more information.

In response to many requests for a less costly on-line ticket outlet, the services of “BrownPaperTickets.com” are now available. The service fees associated with this on-line outlet are substantially less than other popular outlets. For individuals who prefer to purchase tickets in person, the Customer Service Center in each Wegmans store remains a convenient alternative. The ‘Ticket” section provides information regarding the Wegmans and “BrownPaperTickets.com” options.

I hope the enhancements to the series enrich your jazz listening experience. In the end, however, it is always about the music. This is why I am excited about the line-up and forward to welcoming you to the concerts. Thank you for your continued support.

“Rhythmly” Yours,
Jose DaCosta
